We did this as a two-night backpack, camping at Silver Lake and doing a day hike to Twin Lakes the next day.
Camped on Sat/Sun nites and had the lake all to ourselves on Sunday night!
The trails are in great shape. The hike into Silver Lake is a bit steep but the torture doesn't last long. Very worthwhile. We left late (noon) for our day hike to Twin Lakes the next day and wished we'd left much earlier to enjoy these beautiful lakes more! The hike is very scrambly and it would be easy to twist an ankle. Again, a very worthwhile destination but leave plenty of time and be careful. Maybe avoid if you have a bad fear of heights. (I have a moderate one but I was OK.)
Everyone had cleared out of Twin Lakes by the time we got there on a Sunday afternoon so it had an otherwordly quality. The lakes are quite majestic, even more so than Silver Lake (IMHO).
Even though there were wildfires raging not too far away, we were lucky and just got haze, no real smoke. Lots of ripe berries. Spotted one bear on the way back from Twin Lakes, almost at the turn ff with Silver Lake. It ran the other direction! It was an exciting end to that hike, which had already been plenty exciting.
Highly recommend Silver Lake either as a day hike or backpack destination. Twin Lakes would be a hard place to haul packs too but plenty of people were doing it and I understand why.
