Trip Report

Scorpion Mountain via Johnson Ridge — Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023

Central Cascades > Stevens Pass - West

Disclaimer: The road and trail condition can change quickly in the winter season. This report describes the condition as of Nov 18th.

Road condition: Snow free. Pothole in some areas but should be no problem for most vehicles. There were no other car in the trailhead.

Trail condition:

  1. From the trailhead to Sunrise Mountain, the trail is 80% covered in compact snow and clearly marked. Microspikes highly recommended and may be required.
  2. From Sunrise Mountain to 0.5 mile from Scorpion Mountain, part of the trail is in deep snow. Snowshoe highly recommended and may be required.
  3. For the last 0.5 mile to Scorpion Mountain, the trail disappeared and the terrain requires snow scramble equipment and experience to traverse safely. There are risks from exposure and tree well. Falling in the snow without self arrest can be fatal. The summit has good views but is windy in places. Ice axe required.

In summary, do not attempt to summit Scorpion Mountain unless you have winter scramble equipment and experience. I'd recommend stopping at Sunrise mountain which is a good destination to get some views.
