Trip Report

May Valley Trail, Bullitt Gorge — Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023

Issaquah Alps > Squak Mountain

Started around 9am, the sun was warming up the sky but behind me a strong cold front was pushing in from the west. There was still a fair amount of spots at the May Valley parking area.

The forest was mossy and changed as the trail went on. It was easier than the Bullitt Trail at first, then harder due to the incline. The wind was picking up and that front was about to hit, the forest got very quiet. Once I got to the fireplace I did the short walk up to the microwave. Inside the microwave I took a Rudolph sticker. Just as I turned around a gust of wind brought heavy snow,  the cold front was here. I ran around in circles excited for my first snowflakes of the season.

A little hesitant to leave because I knew it would turn to rain as I descended I made my way back. Thankfully my gear kept me warm and dry. Merino base, with a thin zip fleece, then a rain shell. Slightly baggy pants with a fleece inner layer and a water resistant outer material. Enjoying that the rain shell went past my hips, got back to the car with a warm dry booty which my car seats also appreciate. Gone are the days of cold wet legs. Clocked about 8 miles by the end with my extra wandering.
