This is a great area for walking, running, birding and being with friends and family. The views are beautiful all around. You are able to hike along the water front of Union Bay and the Montlake Cut, and also across board walks and through a wooded area. Tons of waterfowl, eagles and woodpeckers.
Right now, many areas of the trail system are waterlogged ~ so be sure to wear waterproof boots. Expect to see many people walking their dogs on leash. But I had complete solitutide while walking along the “Cut” that connects Union and Portage Bays. This is the area where the UW row team practices in nicer weather and you can see parts of the campus across the water.
It would be easy to extend your hike to 5 or 6 miles as there are many trail extensions. Some areas are under construction, but it was easy to work around.
Highly recommend when you just need to stretch your legs but don’t have a full day to spend visiting the back country.
Happy trails!
