Trip Report

East Bank Baker Lake — Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20

Tree fall ~2.3 mi from the Baker River Trail head makes the road impassable to all vehicles but that didn't stop our hiking party of 7. We parked our cars at the tree fall at around 9:10. At the time, there was a small amount of snow that made microspikes and trekking poles beneficial and it was so pristine that we got to enjoy a variety of animal tracks: river otter, coyote, bobcat, and black bear.

The privy at the trail head is in good condition and still has TP. However the trail is in very rough condition from the off-season.

About 1 mile past the suspension bridge there is a tricky creek crossing that either requires delicate balance on an unstable plank of wood or a leap of faith farther up the creek. The wooden walkway on the east bank has been crushed from landslide and tree fall. There's a large tree fall less than a mile before the campsite/beach that was our picnic destination that we barely managed.

This hike took us about 5.5 hours, not including time at our picnic spot on the beach at the campsite.
