Trip Report

McKenzie Conservation Area — Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024

Eastern Washington > Spokane Area/Coeur d'Alene

Hiked McKenzie Conservation Area today. Road getting out to the main parking lot was clear. Some ice in the lot. The trail to Turtle Rock and up Bedrock Ridge are well packed down and easy to navigate. We did not need snowshoes or yak tracks. However, if you want to access the cutoff trails or the Vision Quest trail (goes across the road), they were not trod upon and you’ll have to break trail. There was up to 5 inches of wet sloppy snow in places with plenty of areas that were cleared of all snow under the trees along the ridge.

We saw three white tailed deer frolicking in the marsh/meadow just past Turtle Rock. The lake was still iced over, though you could clearly see a large fissure through the ice.

Quite sloppy and wet overall but still passable by all means. We took our cat and she did just fine, walked about a mile in total.
