Granite mountain is not a place for solitude on a weekend unless you look for a route less traveled. Taking the Granite Mtn.trail 2+ miles toward Olallie Lake, past stream crossing #5,the trail turns north at a subridge. Look for a blaze on the tree left of the trail.(~3400') At this point leave the trail and head up NE. The undergrowth is minimal and good time can be made to 4200' for the traverse to the NW ridge of Granite. The route to the top is straight forward and guaranteed to be lonesome. The conditions now are ideal with good, consolidated snow from 3900'.
