Headed out for a nice 6 mile hike with all the appropriate gear... BUT, I forgot to check WTA for recent posts on this trail and thus discovered the big washed out road. Parked my truck near the washout. there are several bulges in the road that make nice parking spaces and turn arounds. It was pretty easy to get across the creek and head down the road to the trail head. By the time I reached the Peek-A-Boo lake trailhead I had seen at least 10 piles of bear poo (I think). I decided that since I was there alone, and because I hadn't seen a single other vehicle since turning onto the mountain loop highway, that it would be a good idea to skip this hike. Next time I'll bring my bear spray, bells, and a friend who looks more tasty than I do. I'll leave the trail to the animals for now. At least I got a few good miles in. I went just past the Sauk river bridge and turned right and found a short 1.5 mile river walk to fill my day. The trail there is in pretty good shape and there was lots of birds and flowers to look at. Caught a glimpse of a couple red-headed woodpeckers bonking incessantly into a tree trunk.
