Spray Park — Wednesday, May. 25, 2005

Mount Rainier Area > NW - Carbon River/Mowich
Thursday was the perfect day for a trip to the Mowich Lake area. The road is open a month early this year, and the trails are in excellent shape. We chose to hike up to Spray Park for the views and to see the early flowers. The trail was in excellent condition - no washouts, all bridges in, and very little debris on the trail. The best part is there were NO BUGS and no crowds! It was fantastic. We took the spur trail to view Spray Falls 2 miles in. To see the falls you have to cross the creek and climb on the rocks a little, but the view is terrific. With all the snow-melt, the falls is really flowing. It was beautiful. In the hot weather, the spray feels good. We continued another mile and half up into Spray Park. There was still quite a bit of snow. We crossed several snowfields that were getting pretty soft. I would hightly recommend trekking poles, sunglasses, and of course sunscreen. Once in the park, the view of the mountain was spectacular. It looks wonderful with a lot of its winter snow still in place. We saw some early flowers, but Spray Park doesn't yet have its signature color. All in all a great dayhike!
