North Cascades
Ascending Ghost Ridge
Fourteen Mazamas went on this snowshoe trek from the Barlow Pass Sno-Park. The route was south on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) for a mile or so and then we went off-trail up to the summit of Ghost Ridge. We had great views of Mount Hood and Mount Jefferson, but a cold wind prevented us from lingering. We descended down the east face of Ghost Ridge off-trail in wonderful, soft, deep snow to the PCT. We crossed the PCT and continued (on a GPS course) to intersect the Palmeteer Trail about 1/4 mile west of Palmeteer Meadow. We proceeded to the top of Palmeteer Ridge and out to the point for the views. Again, we encountered the biting wind so we descended into the trees to eat lunch out of the wind and then rejoined the Palmateer Trail and back to the PCT for our trek back to the sno-park. Although some of us had done this trek recently, the new snow made for a delightful day. The high overcast with some sun breaks allowed for some good views. Total time 4.5 hours; 1,500 feet elevation gain, 6 miles.
