Hiking is good for the economy: A new report shows the massive contribution that outdoor recreation makes to Washington's economy. Outdoor recreation contributes $40.3 billion in annual economic activity in the state of Washington. This report shows, once again, that trails are a must-have in our state. And highlights the importance of public investment in public lands and trails.

Be fire smart: A fire is burning in the Columbia River Gorge, forcing some residents to evacuate and affecting air quality in the Hood River vicinity. It’s a good reminder to check conditions before you head out — and to be extremely careful about fire safety!

Look up! The Perseid meteor showers are peaking this week. If you can find somewhere dark, it’s well worth the effort to enjoy one of nature’s firework shows.

Wear orange! Or pink! Yes, it’s hard to believe, but it’s already time for hunting season. Bear season has started in Washington and it’s a good time to brush up on safety tips before you head outside in areas where hunting is allowed.

Help pick a name: Seattle is asking for the public’s help to rename six parks along the Duwamish River. Submission will be accepted through the end of the month, and then folks can help pick the names.
