It’s July 21. WTA is hiring! Campfires restrictions are returning to some Washington areas due to wildfire danger. Some facilities will be closed as the Highway 20 repaving project continues. Recreation fee changes have been proposed by Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Rehabilitation efforts are starting up on Stevens Canyon Road. And, check out WTA’s interview with KUOW about what goes into saving a trail. Here’s some news you may have missed while out on trail this week.

WTA is hiring: WTA is currently hiring for multiple full-time positions to support our mission. Apply now to join our team of collaborative and fun individuals committed to the care of Washington trails and public spaces.

Campfire restrictions: Due to wildfire danger, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is restricting campfires on WDFW Eastern Washington lands, and the National Park Service will prohibit all fires at Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area starting July 22. The restrictions will remain in effect until further notice.

Highway 20 closures: Multiple campgrounds and other areas on Highway 20 will be closed temporarily for summer repaving. Goodell Creek Campground will be closed from July 24 to August 8. Newhalem Creek Campground, Skagit River Bridge and North Cascades Visitor Center will be closed from July 24 to August 4.

Recreation fee changes proposed: The Gifford Pinchot National Forest has proposed fee changes at some developed recreation sites. The fees would go toward maintenance of the recreation areas. Northwest Forest and interagency passes would be honored at Forest Service day use sites, regardless of changes to the fees.

Stevens Canyon Road rehabilitation: Stevens Canyon Road reopened for the season on July 15. Due to the road rehabilitation project to repair severe damage, the road will be open every Thursday from 8:00 p.m. until Monday at 6:00 a.m., and closed outside that time. There may be delays when the road is open due to a single-lane closure. Visitors must enter through the Nisqually Entrance to reach Paradise during days when the road is closed.

WTA in the news: Listen to some of our awesome staff talk to KUOW about what goes into maintaining and improving trails, and some of the recent work our Lost Trails Found crews tackled in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness; the segment initially aired on July 18.
