Putney Woods, Saratoga Woods and Metcalf Trail System — Friday, Jan. 11, 2013

Putney Woods, formerly known as Goss Lake Woods, has over 700 acres with trails on South Whidbey Island. It also connects into the 110 acre Saratoga Woods trail system. We parked at the trail head on Lone Lake Road and paused to peruse the map on the kiosk before we started our hike. There is a map of Putney Woods that you can download at http://www.putneywoods.org/map.html and we found it extremely helpful. These trails are used by hikers, bikers and horseback riders. It was a cold but sunny day and the trails were in pretty good shape, although muddy. They are well signed and many of the trails are wide enough that my husband and I could walk side by side. We encountered several mud holes and a couple blow downs, but this was a beautiful hike. The scenery varied from moss covered older forest to areas that have young trees from a 1984 logging. With so much to explore, we'll be back another day to take some different trails and discover more of Putney Woods.
