Trip Report

Granite Mountain — Saturday, May. 4, 2013

Snoqualmie Region > Snoqualmie Pass
I went to the trail head today but found that the Granite Mountain trail is closed until further notice. The Pratt Lake trail is open though.
Did you find this trip report helpful?

Avalanches

Probably due to avalanche danger, and people not being smart enough around here to know better... ahem... I was thinking of going there and then realized, "oh, yeah, I might die, that's not good"

Not a good comment to make

LuminuousAphid are you kidding me. Why would you make a comment like that? Hopefully you wont be hurt sometime yourself so someone can make a comment about you. People can be hurt anytime hiking even when one tries to prepare for all possible risks. They were out enjoying themselves so we should celebrate their lives.

Sorry for confusion

I wasn't implying that the man who was killed should have been more careful or shouldn't have gone (although maybe he shouldn't have), I was actually "ahem"ing about the author who thought it would be a good idea to go when this TR was posted. Also, if I'm hurt, I do hope that people will realize that I did something stupid or went out in less-than-idea conditions, and then learn from that. I was really just trying to get the author here to realize that he needs to look at conditions before picking somewhere to hike. There was a volunteer ranger on the Ira Spring trail Sunday, telling people not to go on the snowfields because of slide danger, and I'm just trying to do my part to further raise awareness. People think that when it stops snowing for the year that all is good; very not true in this sad case

Thanks for the reminder

The reminder to check conditions before hiking is very much appreciated. Although in this case the closure wasn't due to conditions (according to a ranger I talked to on the hike up to Pratt Lake).
WTA is my first stop for finding hikes and I hadn't seen any reports of the closure. I thought it would be helpful for others visiting this site to know that the trail was closed. I'll make sure to check the forest service in the future before heading to the trail head. :-)

body found

The trail was closed because the body of Mitch Hungate was still on the mountain. He was found this morning.
