Trip Report

Colchuck Lake, Aasgard Pass & The Enchantments — Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013

Central Cascades > Leavenworth Area
Did not make it to the Enchantment Lakes, but I tagged them to give folks a heads up if they're looking for trail reports but didn't think to look at Colchuck/Snow Lakes or Aasgard Pass. More details below. Went to Colchuck Lake today on a Core Enchantments permit with a heavy pack for a few days but decided to not stay. The gate to the Forest Service road to the Stuart Lake TH is open. It was a cloudy and foggy afternoon. Rain turned to snow a little above 4000'. About 4-5 inches was on the ground at Colchuck Lake at 4PM--much of which fell Wednesday. Trail was easy to follow from the bootprints of a few other hikers, though the moderate to heavy snow at the lake was quickly covering the bootprints at the time I left. It wasn't slick, though that may change after a day of going above and dipping back below freezing. Entry into the Core Enchantment area via Aasgard Pass was *very* tricky today. From reports I heard on the trail, as much as 18" of new snow fell in some portions of the upper basin, though I never made it there to confirm such a number. There's quite a bit of snow (though not 18") on the way up to the pass from Colchuck. The snow has largely filled in or covered the talus--just enough so that it's hard to see where to place your next step, but not enough to keep you from accidentally stepping in a hole. If you have a late season Enchantments permit, prepare accordingly!

Thanks For Update

We've got a permit for next week. Had wanted to hike from Stuart Lake TH to Snow Lake TH, but have been leaning toward avoiding Aasgard due to snow, and your report is helping to make me feel good about that choice.

How were the larch when you were up at Colchuck?

And with regards to the government shutdown, we received an email saying we can't print out permits while government is down, but you can print out your permit confirmation email and use that as your permit and parking passes.

Thanks!

I also have a permit next week, looks like we will be hiking in Snow Lake route as well. Thanks for the update!

Cool kramee4

We'll hopefully see ya up there! We got a group of (4). I'm curious how much snow is in the Lower Basin area (like around Leprechaun Lake & Sprite Lake).

Larches

Saw yellow larches at Colchuck, so it looks like the colors are underway!

Wish now that I had tried via Snow Lake instead of Colchuck. With my gear I likely couldn't have camped in the Core area, but at least I could have made an attempt to get there.

Hope the weather holds and that you have an enjoyable trip!

Colchuck / Aasgard

Hi swp -

How far did you get on Colchuck/Aasgard before you turned around? A couple friends and I planned to go up/down this route tomorrow (day hike).

What did you see, any tips?

Thanks!

sorry

I failed to notice that swp was the originator of the trip report...

Still curious if anyone has any updated info on this route. Especially now that we're getting some clearer, warmer weather the last couple days.

Thanks!

Approaching the lakes from snow lake TH

We were planning to enter the lottery for the core/snow lakes this weekend. With the shutdown we might just hit the trail without a permit. Does anyone know the conditions of the snowlake entrance to the core enchantments? I am a little worried about the sketchy big on the granite. We are planning to bring snowshoes and poles. Definitely in for some snowcamping!
