Mount Adams South Climb — Sunday, May. 8, 2016

South Cascades > Mount Adams Area
Mount Adams South Climb by John Danger
Road impassable shortly after Morrison camp ground leaving a 2 mile hike to south climb trail head (snow on road was melting rapidly so may not be an issue much longer). Snow was slushy below lunch counter after mid morning and slushy at LC by early afternoon. snow shoes would have been useful but we left ours at home. Windy night camping at lunch counter, two other tents, would have been good to have a shovel to dig out tent site. Stove a must for water. We woke at 5am, summited at 920am. Icey conditions and high winds starting 2/3 up piker's point. We climbed with crampons for the whole summit push.

climbing in one day

Hi John or anyone,
It's a very good description, it helps a lot. I'm planning to do it in the next few weeks alone, getting there very early, around 4am, over the weekend. I don't want to do it alone, do yo think will be several hikers on the trail that early?

There will be others....

.....especially once the road clears to the trailhead. We did the climb in one day in early June last year and by 5 am the lot was full and a lot of people had already gotten started. I've got to think you won't be alone on any decent weather day on a weekend at this point.

John Danger on Mount Adams South Climb

as BryHong8 mentioned there should be quite a few people on the trail however if you're leaving lunch counter at 4am you may be the first going up pikers peak. if the conditions remain the same as yesterday there should be boot trails to follow up.

leaving early from parking lot

Sorry, I forgot to mention, I'm planning to leave around 5am from the parking lot or wherever I can park my Corolla. Is there room to park the car between Morrison and TH at the side of the road? I better walk a mile than damage my car.
By the way, anyone willing to drive from Portland around 2am to do this over a Sat or Sun in the next few weeks?

Parking on the Road

From my recollection, there are a lot of "no parking" signs on that road, which is in really bad shape - My buddy's audi got pretty banged up last year going up to the TH. So not sure how much luck you'll have leaving the car, or what the risk is of being ticketed. I don't know if you ever go to Cascadeclimbers.com, but you may be able to start a thread to find someone to join you from Portland. A lot of the climbers on there do some more advanced climbing, but you may find someone wanting to do Adams South- good luck!

Parking at Morisson

Thank you BryHong8. I assume there are several parking spots at Morisson, right? Will research at the other website for more info.

Yeah, Morrison is pretty big, but it will fill up because people will camp there, too. We went Saturday, June 13th of last year and the spots by the TH were almost full at 4:45 am, but it's a pretty huge area. You'll find something.

Next week

Hi Chris, we will be heading to Adams early Friday and attempting to do the same as John by getting to Lunch Counter and camping then heading for the summit early Saturday morning. If the weather happens to not cooperate on Friday, we'll camp at either Morrison Creek or cold Springs and try to do it all in one day Saturday. You are more than welcome to join us if you can do those days.

Hey everyone. I plan on going or trying to climb mid June arriving at trail head the 14th summit-ting the 15th and coming home to PDX the 16th. Would love to find a partner to head up with. I do have a truck to drive the road in. If anyone is interested for more details email me sz4x21@gmail.com
Respectfully,
Scott
