Found the trailhead without difficulty, thanks to previous postings: turn in at Camp Sheppard, then turn right to the parking lot. The guidebook trail directions are still confusing -- veer right at the first trail junction is correct, but there is a second one where you must go left.
C-ro's post is correct -- the distance and elevation gain in the guidebook are way off. My GPS measured 4 miles and about 800 feet cumulative elevation gain, to a maximum elevation of just over 3000 feet (vice 6 miles, 2800 feet and 5000 feet in the guidebook). At least the web version of this trail description should really be corrected. Going counterclockwise, the trail up to the falls is in excellent condition. Crossing the stream below the falls is a little tricky -- the rocks provide footing, but they get wet and slippery, particularly on a damp day like today. Heading down the other side, there are a number of rock slope crossings where you need good boots and careful footing. Despite the damp day, the trail was basically dry, with no snow in sight. |

We enjoyed a lovely hike to Snoquera Falls today.... once we found the trail, that is. Following the directions in the Day Hiking Snoqualmie Region book, we found the little parking area just south of the Boy Scout camp, but then wandered up and down the trail running parallel to the highway without finding trail #1167 to Snoquera Falls. Finally we backtracked to the road in to the Boy Scout camp and there found a large parking lot and trailhead. Apparently this is the (relatively)NEW trailhead. So, note that one should turn off Hwy. 410 onto the Camp Sheppard Rd., where you will then find the parking area, restrooms and trailhed to your right. The falls were in their full roaring glory and made a wonderful destination and lunch spot. We also tried to locate the trail to Skookum Flats across the highway. We did find a trail down to the river, but no way to reach the trail on the other side. Appears that the old suspension bridge may have washed out.

This was the third day in less than a week doing trail maintenance with WTA on the trail leading to Snoquera Falls. The hike in each day was easy going and dry. The last day was spent finishing a rock wall in an area of the trail that passes through a small rock slide. The trail was starting to erode, but we were able to build up a supporting rock wall and make the trail look as if nothing had happened.

Nice hike, but not even close to 6 miles or 2800 feet of elevation gain. I was expecting this hike to take some work, but it was pretty easy. I would just guess that it's about 4 miles and w/1000 ft of elevation gain.

Trail was mostly dry and totally clear of snow. There are a lot of trails snaking around the area, some marked some not, which can make things tricky initially. Once you're on it, it's a nicely groomed trail with low grades. Past the falls there were a couple of rockslides that sort of obliterate the trail for 20-50' stretches.
Also, this was a really quick hike. I think six miles may be a bit of an overestimation. |

Still a lot of snow in the trees and on the trail. But also really starting to melt off. Very glad for my oiled leather hat, saved my old noggin a few times. The hike was a definite Moderate+ with the snow on the trail and the elevation change, but the trail is in good shape. Angel had no problems until we got to the top. When we started up the last switch I could start to hear a roar, and just as we came to the last bend it was a definite roar. When I saw the falls I exclaimed "WOW!" before I know what I was doing. Absolutely stupendous.
The stream was rushing pretty hard and covered with snow. We could not find the path, and the snow was at Angels chest, so she wasn't too keen on trying to get across. So we turned back. We look forward to doing the entire hike later in the season. As it was, we added White River Trail, and Buck Creek trails to get some added yardage. Met an amiable young man and his dog Bailey. All in all a good spring hike. |

This is a great hike. We did the loop in the counter-clockwise direction. The beginning of the trail had a little packed snow on it, but quickly cleared up. We didn't encounter any more snow until we got to the falls and there wasn't much there. The hike down was good, but we did encounter packed snow that was a bit icy along the bottom. I would recommend bringing YakTrax along if you do the loop instead of just going to the falls and back.

Hiked up to the falls, did not do the loop though but explored a little on the white river and buck creek junction and across the highway to the river where we had to stop due to no way to cross. Our original plan was skookum flats but did not have our sno-park permit for this year which it says you need to park down FR 73.
Trail to the falls is packed down and quite icy- we wore our traction on our boots and carried our snow shoes strapped to our packs. Didnt need our snow shoes until we were at the falls and snow was deeper around the last curve and we hiked up the slope in front of the falls to have lunch which was safe today but if theres a ton of snow you should use your better judgement of course. Snowed most of the day and was foggy so no real exciting views but was cool to see the falls all frozen up. Fun first hike of 2013!! Will try to post some pictures later- when my desktop computer decides it wants to connect to the internet |

We were looking for a hike that had snow but not a whooole bunch of snow. Decided on the Palisades, we had hiked to the first overlook before so we wanted to see what was beyond it. Started off at the trail head with just a dusting, saw some large footprints around the first creek crossing couldnt tell what it was, at first looked like paws then down the path looked like hooves so maybe something was being tracked... and we were hoping it wasnt going to be us!!
Had just waterproof/insulated hiking boots on today, with our snowshoes strapped to our packs (as a last minute descison) as well as our boot trex, so we were well prepared- oh but no poles which would have been helpful, in the morning it was a tad icy on the switchbacks. Made it to the first lookout, fogged in...decided to keep going to the second lookout, trail was obvious up to this point. Snow gradually started getting deeper and kind of snuck up on us. The Trail was barely an indent about the last mile and half to the 2nd overlook, and im amazed we found our way just by the faint lines left, but made it to the second lookout to see sun shining through the trees!! on the ridge there was snow to just below our knees, we wondered how come we never put our snow shoes on coming up, but it just kind of snuck up on us. Had lunch and decided to head down wearing our snowshoes, we blazed on the way down! switched to our trex after we hit the first overlook again for the icy switchbacks- took off trex a little after the lower falls. Overall we had a really awesome day! Glad we took our snow shoes!! I know the conditions are probably a little outdated by now due to the weekend snow but thought I would share our experience on the hike and our pictures since we had such a nice time. |

We hiked the loop yesterday and the waterfall was beautiful. Snow was light for most of the trail aside from the ~1mi stretch near the top, but still very manageable (would recommend gaiters). As the previous poster noted, this hike is not 8 miles/+2800'. It is 1/2 that. Very easy hike, and the waterfall area is quite spectacular this time of year (the water is freezing on the face of the cliff coming down), but most of the hike is fairly unremarkable. There are better hikes nearby this area that are worth the drive- this is one good for families with small children looking for a short hike in the summer. The trailhaed is at the intersection of highway 410 and NF 7155. Parking lot is only 50' off the North side of the highway.

Continuing my exploration around the Snoquera area, I decided to hike the Snoquera Palisades and Dalles Falls. This trail is steep for the first 3 miles and then levels off for the remaining 2 miles to the Palisades South Point. If you continued another 1.6 miles, you will reach the Ranger Peak trailhead.
At 2 miles you come upon Lower Dalles Falls nestled within old growth Cedar and Fir. This fan-tiered waterfall reminds me of a smaller scaled Bridal Veil Falls located near Index, Washington. Another mile in, you come upon the Upper Dalles Falls, which isn't as impressive as the lower falls, but has some really neat vertical rock formations and a steep stairway that takes you to the top of the gulch. It is another mile to the Palisades North Point and your first real view of the valley. Directly across from you will be Suntop Peak and far below is the White River and Skookum Falls. Continue another mile and you will come out at the Palisades South Point and have a good view of the top of Mt. Rainier. The Palisades remind me a lot of Dirty Harry’s Balcony off the I-90, but minus the busy Interstate. It’s quieter, the view is more pristine, and you don’t have man made roads ruining the view. ^_^ FYI: The first 5 miles of trail was perfect! No snow, garbage, slides, blowdowns... If you do continue to Ranger Peak, you will encounter snow at the clearcut about a half mile after the Palisades South Point. |

What a beautiful hike! This short trail to the falls is in perfect condition. The forest is beautiful with old growth Cedars, Fir and Yew trees and the falls is cascading in full force. If you are looking for a nice fall/winter hike this is the one! I also recommend the Moss Lake Trail as well. It's short and sweet and its boardwalks take you through some larger cedar groves.
FYI, it seems that the WTA information for this hike is convoluted on distance and directions. The trek to the falls is about 4 miles round trip and to find the parking lot you need to take a LEFT onto road FS 7155 where Camp Sheppard is located and the parking lot is on the RIGHT. If you want to do the actual Snoquera Falls Loop you will start at the parking lot and when you arrive at the bottom falls you will need to cross Snoquera Creek. After awhile you will come to Wigre Junction where you can come out at Dalles Creek (Snoquera Palisades to the right), Hwy 410 (You can then cross the Hwy and continue onto the Snoquera Flats Trail straight ahead) or loop back to Camp Sheppard (Trail to the left). |

We parked along the road just past the viewpoint and headed up the trail. It's just a few tenths to the JCT. Camp Shepard is a mile to the right on the White River Trail 1199. We went left and up on the Palisades Trail 1198. The trail is in great shape. There was a WTA work crew hard at work fixing a section of the trail. THANKS!!!
The view at North Snoquera Pt was great and there are wildflowers there. We watched a small plane fly through and waved. It tipped it's wing at us=) We enjoyed the flatter hike on up to south Snoquera Pt. From there you can see the top of Mount Rainier, Crystal, Little Ranger, Ranger Creek Airport,Suntop and more. And lot's of flowers. Beautiful! We ate our lunch and took lots of pictures before heading down. It was neat to be on the rock wall that we have seen from Suntop. |

We hiked the loop clockwise. The trail has been cleared and was in excellent condition. More flowers were seen below the falls and in the second half of the loop. Starflower, chocolate lilies, paintbrush, spotted coral root, vanilla leaf, and small-flowered blue-eyed Mary were some of the flowers seen. Our granddaughters visiting from Indianapolis enjoyed "showering" under the falls!

Went up 410 to my favorite hiking grounds past Greenwater. Went to Snoquera falls. Got to the parking area (it really is just past the Camp Sheppard sign on the left, I drove right past it). around 9.30, a few other cars were there.
The trailhead is just a bit further south of the parking lot, there's a sign for the White River Trail #1199. Take this 1/4 mile, and the signs will say Snoquera Falls. There are a number of trees down across the trail, but only one of them required serious negotiating (in this case, squeezing under it). The falls are in full swing right now, it's a good time to see them. You will have to ford the stream below the falls to continue but its easy and there are plenty of stepping stones. Not too much in the way of wildlife (this may be due to the noise being created at the boy scout camp nearby), and the wildflowers are past blooming. I would expect there to be some berries out soon, though. A nice day! I stopped at Federation Forest on the way back to eat lunch on the river. |

This is a relatively short hike (about 5 miles in our case as we did a Boy Scout loop hike to start) to a very scenic falls and rain forest.
We started at Camp Sheppard and walked a loop trail (go through the amphitheater to get directly to the falls trail), we did not plan on but added a nice 0.6 mile addition to our walk. The actual trail starts just after the Boy Scout amphitheater and plods steadily up hill to the falls. We took a lunch break just before the falls and then did the rest of the loop with several photo stops. The trail is well maintained but going up hill using the eastern most portion of the loop gets you to the falls the quickest and is also the nicest trail section. After the falls we encountered several scree slopes with rock stairs which were not as much fun as the pine needle carpeted trail up to the falls. RT took 4 hours with lunch break and several photo breaks. Lots of water coming over the falls so this is a great time to see them. There are 3 to 5 blowdowns on the trail that need to be shimmed over or under but we all did these without problems. |

We began up Little Ranger, continued to the Ranger Creek Cabin, then moved out over the Pallisades trail above Snoquera Falls. Still lots of snow at the Ranger Creek Cabin, about 3 feet. We encountered snow at about 4,750' and it was solid even in the exposures at 5000'. Only a few blow downs across the Pallisades ridge this year, but the snow was very crusty and slick, and we post-holed a couple of sections, which is hard on the knees.
We camped above Snoquera, and the owls gave us good evening entertainment with their hooting. Numerous Elk on the descent back to White River trail on Sunday's descent. |

We had an enjoyable hike up to the top of the Snoquera Palisades, starting from the Camp Sheppard trailhead. This is a great early season hike, as the snow tends to melt a little sooner in the rain shadow of Mt. Rainier. The trail up the Dalles Creek ravine was as beautiful as ever, a wonderland of big trees, mossy cliffs, and waterfalls. The shade of the gigantic old growth Douglas Firs growing in the ravine was very welcome on this hot day. The two waterfalls were brimming with water from the melting snowpack. We got as far as the second overlook at 4000', from which we could see the icy summit of Mount Rainer poking up beyond an intervening ridge. A few hikers scouted the way to the third overlook, and reported that beyond the crossing of Snoquera Falls creek, the trail was still covered with snow.
The Snoquera Palisades trail was in generally good condition. Portions of tread have collapsed in a few places in the Dalles Creek ravine. Above the first overlook, there was one blowdown obstructing the trail. A long section of trail approaching the second overlook could use some drainage work, as there is some erosion. Inexplicably, the junction of the White River Trail with the short spur trail coming from the Camp Sheppard trailhead is still poorly marked. You need to use the White River Trail to get to Snoquera Palisades, but hikers frequently get lost and find themselves on the wrong trails. A short distance from the trailhead, when you reach the amphitheater with the wood benches, work your way uphill on the left side of the benches, then uphill a little more (ignoring trails that head directly into the camp) until you find the trail that skirts the uphill side of Camp Sheppard. In the old days, one would just walk through the camp, but that is discouraged now. Putting up some signs would be a good merit badge-worthy project for the Boy Scouts. Walk north on the trail a half mile, to the junction with the Snoquera Falls Trail. Stay left on the White River trail, and continue another quarter mile to the next junction, where the Snoquera Palisades trail starts. From here, the White River Trail descends to the side of Highway 410. This is an alternative (and shorter) starting point for the hike. Noisy, limited parking along the shoulder of the highway. |

Really easy and pretty hike to the falls. On the loop back we accidentally made a right turn at the fork instead of a left as was instructed by this guide (the signage on the trail looks almost identical to the sign that you see when you first make your ascent). Ended up inadvertently going on an adventure, continuing on a trail that spat us out on the main road about a mile west of the camp sheppard entrance.

Did the whole loop as part of a WTA work party. The falls were running high -- so much that crossing the creek below the falls was unusually difficult. We put down some big rocks to facilitate the crossing (still was a little nervous going across in spots, given the drop-off below). Several blow-downs across the trail; we didn't have the tools to remove them but did make it easier to get across one big blow-down just north of the falls crossing. If you want to see the falls at their peak, now is the time.

It was a gorgeous sunny day and perfect for a hike up to the falls and beyond. I started at the trail head for the Palisades trail and a little farther up you come across the trail from Camp Shepherd. The hike to the falls has minor obstacles and one stream crossing does require a little care. The falls were spectacular! I then continued up-trail and encountered the many switchbacks up towards the first lookout over the cliffs. That was one impressive view of the White River valley. I continued on up to the 2nd lookout and that was even more impressive. I met another hiker there that stated there was still quite a bit of snow on the trail up ahead. I walked to where the snow was deeper than what I was prepared for and turned around. All in all, a great hike that had spectacular scenery which is making up for my poor out of shape calves.

We enjoyed a sparkling clear day on our hike to the Snoquera Palisades. Got as far as the second overlook at 4000', where we could see the icy top of Mt. Rainier. Still some nice fall color, especially in the maples that grow in the steep ravine that the trail climbs to get to the top of the Palisades.
The trail network around Camp Sheppard is as confusing as ever. It is easy to get on the waterfall trail by mistake. To get to the Palisades from the Camp Sheppard Trailhead, you follow an unsigned trail the bypasses the camp on its uphill side. Look for the start of this trail shortly after you pass the log bench amphitheater, next to some trail signs. Turn hard left and follow the unsigned trail. At the next junction a quarter mile past the camp, stay left - the right fork heads up to the waterfall. The next junction after that is signed correctly - head uphill. The downhill trail heads to an alternative trailhead on highway 410. The condition of the trail is good. Some of the switchbacks are collapsed in the steep ravine, and need work. Erosion is occurring on the long climb between the first and second overlooks. Drainage work is sorely needed. Mountain bikes ride this trail (legally), and their wheels tend to cut water-trapping grooves in the tread of the trail. Because of this, keeping on top of drainage issues is especially important. |

We wanted to do a short hike before going home so hiked 2.5 miles to the first viewpoint. We were in the shade most of the way, but it was still hot! We saw 2 groups of hikers and 3 bikers. There are several areas along the trail above the lower falls that need tread work. The rocky, scree areas of the trail show a lot of "wear and tear" since we hiked it this spring. There are at least 3 sections that are "chewed up" by bikes and/or people cutting switchbacks. The trail in the forest sections although "rooty" in places is easily walked. The many vine maples along the trail will be beautiful in the fall!

If you want solitude, then this is the area for you. We only ran into a few bikers today and a group of hikers at the trail head of the Snoquera Falls as we we just heading out. Easy trail to Snoquera--4 miles light elevation and the trail is in good condition. Dalles has a places that are easy enough to pass but could become troublesome in the future. Ran into a few groups of mountain bikers on the Dalles trail, but they were all super polite and nice. Looked for the trailhead south of Camp Sheppard, as indicated by the WTA info, and found it with a little difficult. Should have just entered at the sign to Camp Sheppard where there is plenty of parking. Loved the interpretive trail at the start of the hike, apparently maintained by the Scouts. Easy ascent to the falls (not a 2800 ft climb). Weather was misty and humid but pleasant. A few wildflowers still out and mosses were beautiful.

Might want to bring your own TP, the women's was out when we were there so us girls just used the men's and made the men use the women's! Weather was ok, a little sprinkly/misty/foggy early on but cleared up when we finished. Though minutes after we left it started pouring! The trail was in good condition a little bit of mud but not much and easy to step past. Just as previous posters have stated, the trail was definitely not 2,800 ft elevation gain like the site says! It would have been pretty challenging for me if it was, and I did pretty well. The waterfall was beautiful!

Brooklake Hiking Group (11 of us and 2 dogs) decided to do our plan B hike for the day as the weather was drizzly and Mt Si would not be worth the effort today. Trailheads are at both ends of parking lot near Camp Sheppard making a loop hike possible. We took the trail heading north thru Camp Sheppard and beyond. We initially got on a trail that contained quite a few blowdowns and was not the White River trail. We eventually connected with that trail and from there the travel wasn’t hard. Trail switchbacked up hillside and within a couple of miles we came to Snoquera Falls. Very high falls and a lot of water coming down. Low clouds moved in as we got closer to the falls. There is a side path up to the base of the falls which I explored but the views were somewhat obscured. The regular trail crosses Snoquera Creek and continues into the forest on the other side. There are several trail junctions that are marked and it was not difficult to find our way back to the parking lot and completion of the loop. All in all we did not get that wet. This is a great hike for an overcast, drizzly day like today was. Other options to lengthen (or shorten) the trip are possible. Trail passes are required at this trailhead. Wapiti Woolies was glad to see us, post-hike, as I believe the pass is still closed and business, I’m sure, has been slow.

We began our hike from the Camp Shepard parking lot. In his book, "Day Hiking Snoqualmie Region",Dan Nelson states there is a 2800 ft elevation gain! No way! Our GPS told us we gained 800 ft in 1.5 miles. The trail is in excellent condition. Thank you to WTA for the new trail that leads to the crossing of Snoquera Creek after the first viewing of the falls. It is like a freeway! Bob crossed Snoquera Creek and climbed to the base of the falls while I sat on a rock below the crossing watching the varied patterns of the wind blown upper falls! What a beautiful setting for the falls! We plan to add this to our early spring time hikes!

We wanted a short yet rewarding hike on this beautiful spring day, and Snoquera Falls exceeded our expectations. This was our first hike of the season, and our first time exploring this trail.
We were pleasantly surprised that we were the only ones at the trail-head when we began our Journey, and there was only one additional vehicle when we returned a few hours later. The trail is in great shape presumably due to the WTA work party that recently spent time fixing it up. There were many portions that appeared to be freshly completed, and they did such a great job making it a safe and enjoyable hike, so THANK YOU! We only encountered 2 small blow-downs, but both were very easy to step over so it wasn't a big deal at all. This hike was very relaxing and enjoyable, and the trail was very well maintained. The falls were roaring in all their glory and the surrounding cliffs were absolutely gorgeous! If you do go on this hike I would definitely recommend that you go across the creek if you are able (be careful though!) because the view cannot be beat if you scramble up to the base of the lower falls on the left side. The bugs are just beginning to come out, but they weren't bad enough for us to have to bring out the bug spray. I would definitely recommend this hike and I look forward to maybe exploring the upper loop trail next time I visit the area. |

The trail is in great shape up to the falls. There is a small patch of snow at the base of the falls and water running over the trail there.
The loop from there has many blow downs but they are not that hard to go over, under or around. We saw some little wildflowers blooming. We loved all the different terrain on this trail. Today's sunshine was a big plus too! |

Did this short hike to get out of the house. We lost our dog to heart problems on Mother's Day, it was his b'day 9 years old. Very sad time in our house. It's so quiet now.
It was sprinkling when I began only 1 car in the parking lot at 10. There was supposed to be some sun today but that wasn't the case for me. I went up quickly, enjoyed the new trail it's really lovely now. Scrambled up to the falls, back down. Heard tons of Pikas calling out. Flowers are really getting a late start this year. Did the looop on the way down lots of blow downs to go over and around. Here's a link to tribute of my baby http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPbIKpHzyUE |

Ironic, isn't it, that an area that receives much more rain / snow than places farther north should now be snow-free while even Mt. Si snoozes under 4 feet of snow? Go figure.
But that's what drew me here - I like to look at snow but not necessarily hike in it. Right now the only snow on the hike is a big pile sitting under Snoquera Falls, so don't waste energy toting snow gear unless you like carrying extra weight. Personally I'd rather use the precious pack volume for nutritious trail food like M&Ms and Snickers. Studying the trail description in Craig Romano's guidebook, I was puzzled by the high point notation of 5000'; turns out that it really should be about 3200', verified by both GPS and my cheapo Casio altimeter as I stood at the base of the falls. Not to disparage Mr. Romano's books - they're my bibles for hiking in the Cascades and I've found them to be accurate and informative. So this is just a note for the errata or next edition. Leaving the trailhead at the Camp Sheppard parking lot I was immediately struck by the open, park-like ambience under the tree canopy high overhead. Very nice! And the trail tread is soft and duffy all the way, "like walking on air". A sandwich-board sign warns of WTA work crews on the trail and, sure 'nuf, there they were toiling away near the base of the falls, repairing a short section of trail buried under a winter rockslide. I was very impressed with the quality of their work, turning a section of unhikeable talus into a nice smooth walkway. Kudos to this crew, which has been at the task for three weeks. The falls are impressive. Actually, it's really two falls - a high section coming off Little Ranger Peak and a smaller but much wider lower fantail section. Now's the best time to see the falls as it apparently dries to a trickle later in the season. Hint for photographers: time your arrival at the falls to get there after noon, when the sun swings around the mountain to illuminate the tumbling waters. Wildflowers are just beginning to pop here, so the next few weeks will be prime time for this hike. Right now you can see early bloomers like Trillium and Chickweed Monkeyflower (Mimulus aslsinoides), a low-growing plant with a beautiful but teensy yellow and red flower (only 2-3 mm). There are a few big blowdowns along the way, but these will not be problematic. Much more troublesome is the missing trail sign near the end of the trail (looping anti-clockwise) at a three-way intersection. After scratching your head, just head up the trail heading southeast back to the trailhead. So, if you're using the deep snow in the mountains as an excuse for couch-hugging, it's time to break hibernation and head for the (lowland) hills. |

It was finally so nice outside that my husband, 2 dogs & I decided to go on our 1st hike of the year. We hadn't been to Snoquera Falls and decided to give it a try.
We parked at the little parking lot a few hundred yards after the Camp Sheppard entrance. The 1st 0.5 miles are unmarked & we were afraid that we were on the wrong trail, but once we came to the 1st fork with signage we easily found our way up the right trail and eased our fears. There was no snow on the way up to the falls, despite a little on the ground at the parking lot. There were quite a few large downed trees, but they were easily passable. What a sight when we reached the falls! They were flowing nicely and seemed to come out of nowhere. A rockslide has obscured the trail at the falls & a large snow mound is still present at the bottom. If we had not brought the dogs, we probably could have scrambled over the rocks & snow and gotten a great few of the falls, which were flowing nicely. Since we had the pups with us, we decided not to risk it (although they probably could have passed it easier than us!). There was a bit of the trail carved out of the rockslide & some tools left, so no doubt the able and hardworking WTA will have the trail continuing under the falls cleaned up soon! We had a little snack near the bottom of the falls, with a nice view of the south as well. Then we turned back and made it back to the car having logged about a total of 2 hours leisurely hiking time. This was a great spring hike. We didn't pass anyone else until we were almost back to the car, so it was very quiet and private. We will definitely hike this one again later in the year to see if we can make it all the way around the loop next time. Also, thanks again to WTA for the great work keeping our hikes safe & obstacle free! |

Choose this one to get some miles in. I like it because I'm comfortable I know the way it's got a nice grade to it. Lots of creeks, watefall, decent views and most important little or NO people. You can even see Calypso orchids right next to the trail in another month or so. It was just a great outing, I booted it today left the snowshoes in the car. I post-holed a bit but just added to the workout. A few birds were singing to me at times, light snow, then sun. 6 miles RT.

Trail #1198 [White River?] connecting with trail to Snoquera Pts: N. and S. points. June 13 report by Barb and Bob is still accurate--penstemon and paintbrush in bloom, and clouds boiled up from river below but no views of Rainier this morning and early afternoon. This is a good snow free hike and great for solitude. Saw no one from 10am on way up but several parties as I descended.

We began our hike at an unmarked TH on the North side of HWY 410 just east of the Skookum Falls Viewpoint. There is parking for several cars. You begin on the White River Trail and in about 1/4 mile reach a trail junction with the Pallisades Trail. A large sign states Lower Dalles Falls is 1 mile, Upper Dalles Falls 2 miles, Northern Pallisades 3 miles, and Southern Pallisades 5 miles. The White River Trail continues east so a loop hike is possible if time allows. A through hike is also possible if you have 2 vehicles. Dalles Creek and the lush green forest are beautiful along the trail which elevates gently. We gained 1100 feet and had lunch at an overlook which we thought was the Northern Pallisades, but in looking for a trail description on returning home, we found we had only gone about 2 1/2 miles. There are many vine maples along the trail so this would be a beautiful fall hike. Many forest wildflowers were blooming--wild ginger, spring beauty, small yellow monkey flower, baby blue eyed Mary to name a few. Orange paintbrush and penstemon were blooming on the rocks at the viewpoint. We plan to return and spend the whole day on the many possible loop trails which could include Snoquera Falls--at least we did this 20 years ago.

Decided to do an easy hike since my husband and I hadn't been out in over a month, so we choose to go to Snoquera Falls to shake the rust off. Got to the trailhead and the parking lot was pretty full. It was a beautiful day to be out so it was expected that there would be plenty of people there.
Started up the trail and only saw one couple on our way to the falls. Trail is in good condition and the falls was so beautiful. There was no one there when we got to the falls. There was a little snow at the falls but just in the boulders of the waterfalls. Took some pictures and enjoyed a few breaks of sun while we rested and our dog enjoyed the cold water from the falls. |

This was a great hike on a sunny and warm spring day. We had the trail to ourselves most of the time. Even though the hike was short (4.8 miles roundtrip), we were rewarded with a spectacular view of the falls at the end. We crossed the stream and got all the way up to the waterfall itself. Great views looking south across the valley too. On our drive back we saw two elk crossing the road. I've posted pictures of the hike and the elk on our blog for the Climb to Fight Breast Cancer at www.RainierForResearch.blogspot.com.

This was my earliest visit to a favorite early season hike of mine--but it was too early for the usual impressive flowers, including calypso orchids. On the plus side, there was none of the early season snowpack either, as we were able to go up to the highest of the two northern palisades for lunch and views of Mt Rainier. It's a really lovely hike, about five miles roundtrip, about 1850 feet of gain, to a 4100-foot highpoint. Photos here:

Snoquera Falls was the main objective today, but first, old business. Last week I wrote two reports on the Skookum Flats trail, 1194, relocation project. This is the third and final chapter in that saga. The Buck Creek Trail, 1169, is ½ mile long and connected the Skookum Trail, via a former suspension bridge to the White River Trail, 1199, on the other side Hwy 410. There is an unsigned parking area one block passed the Camp Sheppard road on the left side. A short unmarked trail to the east leads to the Buck Creek Trail on the east shoulder of Hwy 410. Follow this trail into the trees a ¼ mile to the White River Trail, to go to Snoquera Falls, or cross Hwy 410 on a long diagonal to go to the White River bridge.
Uphill from the former bridge location, a new trail extension has been tagged with tape to the location of what will become the new bridge crossing, about a block upstream. Stakes and the ’blue line’ mark the east anchor of a future suspension bridge. This dead-end section of 1169, since 2006, has been very well maintained; it also has recently been covered with crushed rock up to the intersection with the new trail extension. Snoquera Fall is great little hike and still below the snow line at this time. If interested only in Snoquera Falls, park at the Champ Sheppard Trailhead. If you park at the little lot, watch your signs, there is a crazy quilt of trail intersection before you get the Snoquera Falls trail. My 2001 GT map doesn’t show one of the interconnecting trails. Spring is the best time to go up to the fall; there is no water this time of year. All trails are in good condition, except the little side trail going up to the base of the fall, its very slick. |

We had a day off work and an errand in Tacoma, so we went looking for a Rainier hike to round out the journey from Seattle. The Mt. Rainier National Park website is a great resource, with snowline information, road and bridge problems, and a listing of hikes and their percentage of snow cover. Cross-referencing that data with our pile of hike books, we decided to try a new trail and headed for Snoquera Falls, just northeast of the park.
The main trail up to the falls is great: a gentle uphill, signs of recent trail maintenance, and just a little awkward footing across shifted rock slopes. Be sure to take your map and trail guide with you, because there are several unsigned forks in the first 0.6 miles. We had a full view of the falls while crossing the last rock field to the creek; up close you can hear the falls but not see its upper reaches. A good spot to snack in the sun. Across the creek, taking the long way back, we had two surprises. First was the picked-clean skeleton of some large mammal, immediately uphill from the trail. No sign of any predator larger than flies by this time. Second was the treacherous descent traced through the rockslide that you'll read about in other recent trail reports. This was hard, one-step-at-a-time work of finding footing steeply downhill in a loose mix of dirt and rocks. The walking stick that was helpful in the creek crossing became essential for this descent. But someone before us had found a route, so we followed their skid marks until (praise God and WTA) flagging tape showed us the trail headed off along the hillside. It's tough but possible to use the trail now to get down, but we wouldn't even consider it as an uphill route. Good things seem to lie ahead for this trail, though, because farther on we passed Crew Leader Mike and his intrepid WTA volunteers, moving rocks and soil to leave much-improved trail in their wake. And the flagging tape seems to indicate route-finding to deal with the rockslide area. Hooray WTA! A pleasant walk for the last couple miles back to the car with the light patter of raindrops. Time on trail: 2 hours. Quads very sore from descent the next day. |

Found this one on the list of suggested WTA spring hikes and decided to give it a shot. Almost no one at the trailhead when we started out, except for a couple of park volunteers who warned us against going to the falls due to falling ice and rock chunks. We decided to go anyway and use our best judgement. Got to the falls around 11 am, no ice to be seen whatsoever so perhaps the information was out of date? Trail completely clear of snow despite snow in the parking lot.
This can be done as a loop so we crossed the creek and kept going but came up against a sizeable rockslide which has obliterated the trail. We were unable to figure out where it picked up on the other side. No map, so we decided to turn around and go back. Met many people coming up on our way down. Terrific "warm-up" for the beginning of the season! |

My friend and I left Enumclaw and headed up 410 on a sunny day. News at Wapiti Wooley's was grim - most trails were still buried under snow. Luckily, we didn't listen and headed up to try to reach Snoquera Falls. Turned left into Camp Sheppard parking lot, 11 miles after Greenwater - the lot was plowed bone dry today, with lots of snow towering around it. Decided to try the trail and see what happened.
Some minor snow patches on the trail - poles helped, but weren't necessary - but the vast majority was dry ground. Perfect conditions. Reached the falls - a snow-covered path meandered through the rockfall. Poles really helped here; if you like solid ground beneath you, you might want to stop before the rockfall and enjoy the falls from there. Made it to the creek coming from the waterfall, took a snack break. Enjoyed the sunshine and the view of the falls, with snow all around. Eventually headed back down the way we came (though you could continue on the trail and loop around home). I think we went about 4 miles. Great hike, great day, glad we risked the drive up. Hike took less than 2 hours. |

Hadn't seen this hike in any of my guidebooks. Russ, Brooklake Hikers group leader, knew of this beaut, having done it previously. Nine of us in Brooklake group set out on a perfect Saturday. A couple of waterfalls are reached within first mile. Cliffs remain wet most of year and, I'm told, spectacular ice forms in winter when waterfalls freeze up. A series of steep wooden stairs are reached soon after. Most of this hike is in the forest which was welcome on this day in which it was to reach the low 90's in lowlands. We pointed out to Russ that the vine maple is fully leafed out now. A first viewpoint is reached in about the first 1.5 miles or so. Wildflowers starting to come out. It looks like there is little snow left on Suntop to the west. Woody, Goober Canari, and I broke from group and continued to the next viewpoint, listed on the trailhead sign as the northern viewpoint. The very tip top of Mt. Rainier can be seen from here, also many multicolored wildflowers. Signage stated this viewpoint is 3 miles from trailhead but I would guess is closer to 4. Took lunch here and enjoyed the views beyond & below. Continued on the trail to the southern viewpoint. One clearcut is passed thru en route. Soon after dipping down to cross a creek the trail heads back up and to the southern viewpoint. More of Mt. Rainier can been seen from this viewpoint which is at about 4,200 feet elevation. According to signage, this viewpoint is supposed to be 5 miles from the trailhead, but it did not seem far from the northern viewpoint. I also believe I could see Noble Knob further to the south. An airstrip also noted near Hwy 410. No snow encountered on trail. We met back up with the group at the northen viewpoint. On the way back, we made multiple stops at streams, and following Woody's lead, cooled ourselves off with cold fresh stream water, ahhhhhh. Back to the cars to rest our tired puppies and wait for the rest of the group. A nice 10-11 miles round trip, not too steep, that can be expanded as the trail continues to Ranger Creek, etc. I highly recommend this one, especially earlier in the seaon when higher elevation trails may still be snowbound. Also no bugs (yet) to speak of. Yeah! |

We have visited Snoquera several times the last few years. In January 2008, just prior to one of the major snowstorms, we observed a huge rockfall had taken place. The fellas at the boyscout camp told us it happened in Nov. 2007, and they could hear the rumbling for over a minute. We saw bowling ball sized chucks of 'blue ice'. Literally, sky blue colored pieces of ice. I later learned that this can only form under conditions of extreme pressure. Went back to confirm what we saw. The trail at the top was wiped out, all the brush was gone, the trees nearest the bottom of the cliff have been physically stripped of all their branches, there are gravel piles heaped along the uphill side of existing trees, and there are scars on existing trees as much as 40 feet up their trunks. We also noticed much forest floor detritus mixed in the very loose rubble. This must have come from above. Also a large portion of the rock face is missing its moss and lichen ""coating"". I approached the top of the new rock pile, and there were small bits of gravel landing around me. USE CAUTION ON THIS NEW SLOPE UNTIL IT STABILIZES. |

This was a good-news, bad-news sort of hike. The bad news was that though the Forest Service said ""there's water in the falls"", I think the full story now is ""not much"". There were only a couple of spots (one off-trail) from which I could see any falls at all. The good news was that I had waited long enough in the year for all of the blow-downs reported earlier to have been cleared off, so on the south side of the loop there was nothing between the trailhead and the falls, and crossing the creek was easy. The only blow-down I encountered was just on the far side of the creek, and it was simple to walk under it. I went as far as where the cairns mark a passage across the slide, but not liking the looks of it (being alone, and with dogs, and slipping could send me a long way down) I turned back. |

I printed out trail info for Snoq Falls from the Mt Baker Snoqualmie Natl Forest website and found it tricky to find the actual trailhead using their info. Below is a tip for more clarity. (Note: A couple years ago we attempted to find the trailhead via the Camp Sheppard lot. We finally stumbled onto it, but the boy scouts could sure improve on the trail markings here; there are a lot of unmarked trails in the Camp Sheppard area). |

Friend and I were a little concerned as we headed up 410 out of Enumclaw on Saturday morning. It wasn't the rain that bothered us - it was the half dozen sheriff's Suburbans we saw along the road. We got to the parking lot at Camp Sheppard, and a Pierce County sheriff in a blue jumpsuit walked past us. I was a little more concerned when a Department of Corrections van pulled up to the gate of the campground. I asked the sheriff if they were looking for someone. He laughed and told me that there was a huge SAR conference going on at Crystal Mountain. |

A deserted parking lot at Camp Shepard was a surprise at 11:30 on Mothers Day. We thought a short trip to Snoquerra Falls would be just the thing. We headed north out of the parking lot to the amphitheater, turned right and took the left (less developed trail) to go towards the falls, thinking we would check out the nature trail (right path)on the way back. Work has been on-going on this trail, the blow downs increase as you go up. Nothing Maisie couldn’t leap up on or trot under, her humans managed with a few grunts. Lovely wildflowers, the last of the trillium at the start, many orchids along the trail through the woods, and chocolate lilies??? – those green and brown bell-shaped ones - near the waterfall. More varieties looked to be ready to burst open at any time. Trails are a little confusing, follow the signs to Snoquera Falls. We forded the stream below the falls and scrambled up along the old water pipe to the plunge pool on the left side looking upstream. Lots of spray and volume. Definitely cool. We decided not to do the loop because we remembered the ugliness of transecting the rock slide west of the falls a few years ago. Instead we branched onto bits of the White River Trail and Buck Creek Trail to lengthen our loop back. We were aiming for the nature trail near Camp Shepard but somehow ended up on Hwy 410 instead. Quite a few more pooches in the parking lot when we returned. We spoke to some people who did do the loop and found it passable with a small child and 2 dogs. |

Snow flakes were starting to fall as I pulled into the empty parking lot for the Snoquera trailhead in Camp Sheppard. The trail started out in good shape and was free of snow however it was pretty confusing where the Snoquera trail left the Boy Scout trails. The trail only gains about 400 feet from the trailhead to the falls but there was surprisingly a lot more snow near the falls. There were also more blown down trees near the falls. The obstacles were worth overcoming though as the falls looked magnificent. I continued on past the falls hoping to complete the loop counter-clockwise. My plan of completing a loop was put to an end soon after the falls where the trail disappeared under a landslide. With no visible safe way around it, this may be the trail’s end. I headed back the way I came but decided to take the trail to the Skookum Flats instead of returning to Camp Sheppard. At the road the sign said the bridge was out but I had to see for myself. Sure enough, there’s not much left of it, just a few cables with dangling planks. There is a fallen tree which one could cross on but I decided to save that butt scoot for another day. |

Our group of six, Sue, Val Ann, Joleen, Sally and myself, plus Tiffiny the West Highland Terrier met at the Enumclaw Ranger Station to car pool up to the trailhead for the Snoquera Palisades Viewpoint trail. The trailhead is about 1/2 mile north of Camp Sheppard with parking in a wide spot along the east side of Highway 410. After we got our boots on and were getting ready to go, a group of students from Thunder Mtn. Middle School showed up for their hike up to the first (north) viewpoint. There were 115 students, plus teachers and parents! They went zooming up the trail except for some of the adults who could not keep up. There are a couple of nice waterfalls to see on The Dalles Creek. Before getting to the upper falls there is a set of stairs to ascend. There are cedar slabs spiked to a log that has steps cut into it. After getting by the first viewpoint, we had the trail to ourselves as the students turned around and headed back down. We got to the second viewpoint at 3,300' under sunny skies and a view down to the White River. After eatting lunch and lounging around for an hour, we started the trip back down. Four mtn. bikers rode past and were out of sight in a flash as they sped down the trail. We saw a few hikers heading up as were hiking out. Some wildflowers were out and a couple of hawks flew around over us as we were eatting lunch. Another nice day in the mountains. |

The trail to the top of the Snoquera Palisades is free of snow and in fine condition, except for a few small blowdowns. The spectacular waterfall located midway up the ascent is running strongly. I made it as far as the second vista point at 4500', but did not linger long as a rain squall swept in soon after I arrived. This is a great early season hike, highly recommended. |

Finding the trail was a little confusing. Go through the boy scout camp for easier trailhead access. Lots of calypso orchids, indian paintbrushes, a few morels and ceps, garter snakes and a female elk were the fauna and flora highlights of this hike. The waterfall is beautiful. It's a vigorous 100 yards hiking up from the trail to the falls. There are a couple of rockslides on the trail; one of them is somewhat dangerous and makes the trail difficult to follow. Don't slip because you'll go all the way down... The rockslide can be avoided by doing the first half of the loop counter-clockwise and then retracing one's footsteps after reaching the falls. There was a little bit of blow-down but nothing serious. This hike is a rewarding one for the sure-footed. |

The trail to Snoquera Palisades begins at the west end of a small dirt pullout along Hwy 410, about a mile west of Camp Sheppard. At .2 mile, there is a junction with the trail coming from Camp Sheppard, 1 mile east. From there, the trail climbs steeply with many switchbacks and steps up a very steep hillside. Before reaching the steps, there is a side trail to the bottom of Snoquera Falls, cascading over rock cliffs. Another falls can be seen through the trees. After climbing about 1200', the trail becomes more level and an overlook is reached. A second overlook is 1 1/2 miles further. There wasn't a view of Mt. Rainier, but we saw several calypso orchids along the swithbacks and some beautiful red paintbrush at the second overlook. Pensteman was just starting to bloom. We talked to two men who were geocashing at the first overlook. We had lunch at the second overlook, then returned the way we had come. The trail continues on and joins the Ranger Creek trail to return to Hwy 410. The boy scouts built and maintain this trail and it was in good condition. In fact, it looked as though they had been working on it while we were up above. There were 2 or 3 logs to step over and 1 to get under, but other than that, the trail was clear. |

Using previous trip reports for the area and the “Best Hikes with dogs in Western Washington” book, my pup and I were able to navigate our way around the maze of trails to the falls. Good hike to practice our trail skills together on. I highly recommend this one with your pup. |

We had a couple of doggies who needed a romp, so we went to the new Best Hikes With Dogs book and figured Snoquera Falls would be a good early-season hike. We parked at the nice parking lot at the trailhead by the Camp Shepard Boy Scout camp. I have many memories of that place due to the several years I was involved with my sons' troop. You head up a very nicely built trail a few hundred yards to the camp's campfire program area. The direct route is to go straight, but I recommend going right and taking the little nature loop on a very good trail. It winds up right back at the campfire area in about a quarter mile. You then go right on a not-so-fancy trail, up a bit to a junction with the White River trail. |

Took some Aussie friends out for a hike to show them the NW, so Snoquera seemed like a good place to start on a hot day. Started from parking lot at Camp Sheppard and headed into the cool woods. A little confusion at the scout campfire area, but memory served me correct and we headed uphill on the old dozer road to the junction. Once on the trail they were wowed by the flora: trilliums, columbine, indian paintbrush, just to name a few. Continued up the hill to the crossing over Snoquera Creek-- falls just above us. About 100 ft beyond creek is a very steep trail up to the falls. Had lunch at the falls kids dipped their feet in the cool water, then packed up for trip down. Decided to make entire loop, so we headed NW from the falls. IMPORTANT NOTE: if you don't like heights, or have small children, going this way is probably not a good idea. Trail cuts through numerous talus slopes, hopping boulders. Lost trail at a switchback and had to negotiate a very bad slope to find it. Finally back on trail, the hike down to valley was easy. Linked into White River trail and headed back towards cars via Camp Sheppard after a wonderful day. Beautiful falls, didn't rain, only saw one other person--what could be better |

A nice early-season hike is up to the Snoquera Palisades, above the Camp Shepard Boy Scout Camp on Route 410. There is a nice new parking lot at the trailhead near milepost 53. The trails can be a little confusing leaving the parking lot. You stay left at the Boy Scout amphitheater and go left again on the White River trail, #1199, and go on past the Boy Scout camp. Keep going west past the junction with the Snoquera Falls trail and in about a mile and a half from the trailhead, go right toward the Palisades. The sign says that there are overlooks in 3 and 5 miles. |

A very peaceful drive out lonely highway 410 took me to Camp Sheppard and a series of hikes this fine day. The trek up to Snoquera Falls was excellent. The total lack of signs at all of the lower trail intersections made it even more fun...stay left at the camp fire circle and head uphill. There were a couple of fresh blowdowns across the trail but nothing to fret over. |

THIS WAS A NICE LITTLE MID-WEEK BREAK FOR US. THE 1/4 MILE NATURE TRAIL HAD A LG. BLOW-DOWN AND SOME ICY SPOTS, BUT THE TRAIL UP TO THE FALLS WAS IN PRETTY GOOD SHAPE. THERE WAS ONLY 1 BLOW-DOWN THAT WAS EASY TO STEP AROUND AND A FEW LITTLE PATCHES OF SNOW OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE TRAIL. RIGHT AT THE BASE OF THE FALLS THERE IS A LITTLE HARD-PACKED SNOW. NOT MUCH SHOW TO THE WATERFALL, MORE LIKE A TRICKLE. THE TRAIL WAS DRY AND MADE FOR A NICE AFTERNOON. NOBODY ELSE ON THE TRAIL. SAW SOME ELK SCAT BUT NO ANIMALS OTHER THAN A CHIPMUNK AND SOME BIRDS. |

Some blow-downs along the trail, none difficult to get around. The falls are currently running at full strength. I have heard that repairs to the trail to complete the long-missing loop are in progress, although I didn't see any evidence of it at the falls. In any event, getting across the creek where the falls are would surely be a tricky business at this time of year. |

This is a fun little hike to do with the kids. About a mile and a half in length, it begins at the Camp Sheppard parking area off of 410 about 11 miles south of Greenwater. There is a slightly confusing intersection just beyond the camp fire circle, but if you stay on the trail that goes up, you can't go wrong. In 1/2 mile from the car, is an intersection, go left, signed ""Snoquera Falls 1 mile"". After a mile(seems less), the falls begin to come into view. Go now! In the summer there is not much to see, but in spring, it's quite impressive. If you follow the trail through the creek below the falls, there is a steep, but easy and fun for kids, trail up to the base of the falls, which spill off of spectacular, overhanging cliffs. The trail beyond here has been blocked for about 10 years due to a slide, but signs indicate that the Scouts are busy repairing it. Had no time to explore this day. It looks as though all the snow had melted off this trail a couple of weeks ago, but there was a little fresh stuff, just enough for some snowball fights with the kids. |
