Kendall  Katwalk, Park Butte, Tonga Ridge, Indian Heaven Loop... to some people these are just trails. Pretty? Sure. Views? You bet. But to others, these hikes are feasts. At least in the month of September.

Have you been looking for a use for all your old Nalgene water bottles? They make terrific storage containers for gathering huckleberries on the trail. I can attest to this. And if, after your next hike, you return home with a couple of containers full of fresh, ripe and wild huckleberries, you might want to read this immediately.

Backcountry cook and guidebook author Sarah Kirkconnell shared her favorite huckleberry recipes in the September / October issue of Washington Trails magazine. Learn how to make Double Ginger Huckleberry Cobbler, and why you want to incorporate huckleberries into your next trailside batch of Curried Salmon Pilaf.

Still have leftover berries? You don't have my sympathy. Check out more huckleberry recipes at www.trailcooking.com.
