With the downturn in the economy, job opportunities are scarce, and this applies equally to the outdoor recreation world.

Interested in doing some work that benefits hikers? Here are a few opportunities that have come across my desk in the last couple weeks. One is a paid position, one is a volunteer position, and one is an apprenticeship course for young women.

The U.S. Forest Service is hiring a temporary, full time visitor information receptionist for the Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Information Center at the downtown Seattle REI. This is a six-month position, and applications are due May 1. Read the job description here. Apply here. For more information call Renee Bodine at 425-783-6015 or e-mail her here.

The Chelan Ranger District is looking for a volunteer to staff the Lyman Lake wilderness base camp in the Glacier Peak Wilderness between July and August 2009. The position requires the volunteer to survey trails, make contact with hikers, and hike with a 40-pound pack up to 10 miles per day. A $21-per-day stipend is offered for food and expenses. The position is open until filled. More info is here. To apply, contact Barbara Budd, Volunteer Coordinator Chelan Ranger District by e-mail or 509-682-4900.

Passages Northwest is offering an apprenticeship opportunity for young women 16 to 21 years of age who are interested in exploring the idea of a career in outdoor experiential education. The course prepares them to take leadership roles in outdoor and experiential education and opens doors for continued leadership experiences, including expedition opportunities and/or paid work. After the 12 day course, which includes a backpacking and rock climbing expedition in North Cascades National Park, apprentices can participate in a 2010 NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) course. Cost is on a sliding scale, $50-$1400.To request an application, send an e-mail call 206-286-8601.
