Hiking Thelma Gilmur Park

Tucked away in the residential city of Fircrest and named after the woman who fought for its protection, this park offers a short loop trail around a small pond. It was originally a peat bog that was dredged; the pond is what remains.

Along the edge of the path signs tell visitors what plants they are looking at, providing a little education along with a little exercise.

Getting There

From downtown Tacoma, drive west on WA-16 for 1.5 miles, then take exit 1C for Center St. At the end of the offramp turn right onto Center St. for 0.2 mile, then turn left onto Orchard St. for about a mile before turning right onto Emerson St. After 0.7 mile on Emerson, turn left onto Evergreen Drive and the park entrance will be on your left. There is no parking lot, so you’ll have to find street parking.

Take Transit:

Pierce Transit route 53 stops at the intersection of Emerson and Evergreen, which is a couple hundred feet from the park entrance.
