Goat Creek Trail No.959 begins across the road from Cougar Flat Campground on the Bumping River Road. The trail winds along the road for a hundred yards before it turns into a steady moderate grade up to American Ridge. The trail is in great shape with just a few easily navigated blowdowns. There is a single trickle of water 2.6 miles up the trail. There is no snow along the way.
Once you have assumed the ridge you can climb Goat Peak to the east of traverse American Ridge to the west. The ridge offers expansive views into the William O. Douglas Wilderness and beyond. Goat Creek Trail appears to be lightly used and offers a nice opportunity to camp at Cougar Flat and enjoy a tranquil trail adjacent to the campground.
