Third Burroughs summit commands impressive views of Mount Rainier and is so close you can almost touch it.
The trail starts from the northwest corner of the Sunrise parking lot. Follow it towards Frozen Lake and reach the junction to the Burroughs Mountain Trail. From here, venture as far as your heart desires.
Most day hikers stop at Second Burroughs, which offers outstanding views, but those who continue on to Third Burroughs are awarded with an even more spectacular view. It’s hard to imagine there is a better view than Second Burroughs, but the effort required to Third Burroughs is worth it.
Snowfields vary season to season throughout the trail and Third Burroughs almost always has snow. Micro spikes and poles are always helpful, but the hike was successful with poles and boots over multiple snowfields.
After returning to First Burroughs, take the Sunrise Rim Trail back to the parking lot for a loop option.
Don’t forget water and sunscreen as this hike is fully exposed. Toilets and trash cans available near the parking area.
🔆The Sunrise Road is open seasonally. Check national park website for road status.
🌀Trust your gut and instincts. If you feel uncomfortable or uneasy don’t continue and turn back.
❄️Glissading and backcountry ski opportunities.
🌼Help preserve the fragile meadows by keeping off.
