Trip Report

Independence and North Lakes — Sunday, Aug. 2, 2020

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway

This hike has it all! Majestic views, cyan colored lakes, aqua blue tarns, and an abundance of wildflowers to make oneself feel that they are truly one with nature. A few things to note below:

- The slide does add on about 2mi RT to the entire hike, so be prepared for that.

- The trek to Independence Lake is what I would consider quite easy.  It is only about 1mi from the true TH, and is family friendly.

- I would caution families with young kids wanting to attempt onward to North Lake; the switchbacks are no joke and most are exposed to direct sunlight.  I had my toddler on my back and can tell you that it was a helluva workout.

- Due to time constraints we stopped at the third tarn before North Lake and turned around after a brief respite.  It was still a great place to stop and have lunch on the rocks overlooking the lake (one of my hiking buddies even took a dip!).

- I can't wait to come back in the future and camp out out - we saw a handful of hikers who were over-nighting it. Jealous!
