Trip Report

McClellan Butte — Sunday, Aug. 23, 2020

Snoqualmie Region > Snoqualmie Pass

It's hard to miss McClellan Butte as you drive up I90. The peak is imposing and interesting, it begs to be climbed.

Had a great hike today. This hike is NOT 9 miles. All Trails logged 10.8 miles and 3724 ft gain from trail head to the top of the scramble. Took just under 4 hours round trip.

The hike is beautiful. Gradual to steep ascent through old growth most of the way up.

While I have done a lot of hikes, I've never done a scramble before today. The scramble is frightening at first, but there are plenty of holds and steps and it was easy going up. Going down was even easier - I was more or less able to walk down the scramble. Definitely a good introduction to scrambling.

Lots of people at the top of the summit block, but there was plenty of space and everyone was friendly. Most had masks. Clear day and the views were spectacular. Could see most of the major I90 Corridor summits. Spotted Mt. Si, Teneriffe, Mailbox, Defiance, Bandera, and Granite. Could also see a silhouette of the Stewart range and, of course, Tahoma towering over all.
