Trip Report

Woodard Bay Conservation Area — Saturday, Aug. 29, 2020

Olympic Peninsula > Olympia

This trail is a great little outing that takes you both through the woods and then out to the Sound. There are a few wood features through the forest and some pond overlooks before the trail takes you out to overlook an inlet.

There are little interpretive moments with part of a train tressle left in the water and artist works resembling Indigenous canoes with baskets of common foods to the area inside.

The other side of the little inlet looks over the far side of the park. Today it was quite busy with bird activity. Apparently that area is a cormorant and heron rookery so it was quite loud and interesting to watch!

The other part of the trail that connects with the Chehalis-Western Trail is a little down the road and I would recommend NOT walking around the bend in the road to get there as it is a pretty busy thoroughfare.

From there, the trail goes out toward the rookery so it is closed certain times of the year. The gate was open today so we walked out, but from the smell and activity, you could tell the birds would not want you there! Do pay attention to signage and be aware this part of the trail will most likely be closed from the Spring through the end of August.
