Trip Report

Vesper Peak, Sperry Peak — Saturday, Aug. 29, 2020

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway
Road is Closed

Brief trip report for my recent trip to Vesper, Wolf, and Sperry Peaks. MY brother and I actually climbed this on 8/23/2020, sorry for the tardiness of the trip report!

Road:  The road is currently closed. They are doing construction work (culvert repair perhaps?) and there is a very large ditch in the middle of the road.  The sign said that is likely to be closed through the first two weeks of September, but didn't say precisely when.  It is highly unlikely that they will let you pass during the week, but if you go on the weekend you can walk the extra 2(ish) miles to get to the trailhead.  The road is moderate the entire way and very easy walking.

Trail:  The trail is in good shape all the way to Vesper.  Some intermittent snow still exists on the way up to the Vesper Summit, but most of it can be avoided by following the larger boulders on the way up.  The lake is still mostly snowed in, but it's beginning to look like a lake finally!  The trail to Wolf is snow-free after you leave Vesper, and the Wolf-Sperry traverse is also snow-free.

Route: To do all three peaks, I highly recommend doing it in the order of Vesper, Wolf, and then Sperry.  A faint trail is obvious to follow from the base of Vesper to Wolf, and again from Wolf to Sperry. Be advised, Sperry is a moderate bushwhacking scramble (class II or III) by its easiest route; and, if you're a bit unlucky, you can get stuck ascending much more difficult routes up Sperry.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. Cheers!

Howdy! I'm planning to do just Vesper. Do you think this would be suitable for dogs?

I don't see any reason why a dog couldn't do Vesper.. depending on the type of dog of course. It has some steep points, but you can avoid scrambling altogether if you want too. Some bouldering is involved, but nothing that a medium (or bigger) sized dog should have a problem with.
