Goat Marsh Research Area — Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2020

South Cascades > Mount St. Helens

Goat Marsh is a short but sweet hike. The trailhead is very easy to miss, really just a wide spot in Forest Road 8123, with room for maybe two cars. The views of Mount St. Helens from the lakes are excellent. Spotted a whole herd of elk out in the marsh.

I had read about the old-growth stand of noble fir here, and upon finding it, it did not disappoint. Hike to the end of the trail at the second lake, then continue upwards into the basin below Goat Mountain.

I did not see any other hikers on a sunny Tuesday afternoon.

Tried to find the trailhead last weekend and couldn’t. Head up FS Rd 81. Keep going straight. After about 11 miles there’s a narrow, not-well traveled road continuing straight - take it! The main road is rough, need medium clearance (lifted Crosstrek did fine)
