The road is open all the way to Johnston Ridge right now despite closed signs along the road up. The visitor center exhibits are closed but gift shop is open 10 to 6 now. Bathrooms here are limited to a number of porta-a-pots in the parking lot (They were clean when I was there).
I've been along this section many times over the years and did it today as part of a longer hike. As the description says this is a smooth well paved section of trail developed next to the visitor center. It is ADA but a couple parts are relatively steep and a couple of small pot holes have popped up. The trail has a number of interpretive signs and great views of the mountain. So if you aren't into walking to much this is perfect for kids and those who don't want to go to far. If you want to go further the trail extends to the west towards the Hummocks Trail and east towards Harry's Ridge, the Mount Margaret Backcountry and beyond. There are also benches along the paved trail and a couple on the east unpaved trails within a mile or 2 so you can sit and relax.
Keep in mind this area can be busy especially on the weekends. On Tuesday the crowds weren't bad and almost everyone I encountered was wearing masks and respectful. Good time to go before the weather turns for the winter.
