Trip Report

Heybrook Ridge — Friday, Dec. 4, 2020

Central Cascades > Stevens Pass - West

A superbly constructed short trail to a very nice viewpoint; at least as nice as Heybrook Lookout in my opinion.  Note that one can wander the powerline swath trail for further adventures.  I went about a mile  before turning back, though I could have continued.  Listen and you will hear the eerie electric crackling sounds especially evident in the otherwise silent swath.  Reminds one of the stupendous flow of power being transmitted in those cables above.

A question for swath wanderers:  What is the purpose of the large rock foundation structure, complete with stairs, about a quarter mile up the swath?  By the way it affords a great view of Baring and the valley; a nice place for lunch if the main viewpoint is crowded.  See photo.

What is this??

A great view spot but the view is clogged with power lines.

The power lines are very evident but you can find spots with nice clear views.

This is the foundation for a future open-air "Memory Shelter" that will be made of local logs. It is an on-going project by the Friends of Heybrook Ridge, stalled out by weather and Covid, but we will persist! It has a gorgeous view of Canyon Falls and will one day have a connecting trail branching off from the main "Leovy" trail. Thank you for your photos.
