Heather Park — Saturday, May. 15, 2021

Olympic Peninsula > Northern Coast
Tree at 4500’

I hiked solo from the Heart O the Hills campground to the Lake Angeles / Heather Park trailhead. I chose Heather Park and proceeded up. The trail was well maintained and the climb was steady. “Halfway Rock” appears on signage at the start of the trail but this feature was never obvious to me. I met a ranger at the 3500 foot level and this was the only other person I saw until the end of the hike. At 3800, there were a few snow and ice packs on the trail. At 4500, the trail was covered with solid snow and ice. The ranger had warned me the trail was not safe beyond there because of deep snow and postholing. I had left crampons, gaiters and snowshoes at home. I turned around and headed down, again not discerning what Halfway Rock was. The forest was lovely and quiet. There were no views or overlooks on this section. I had hoped to get to Heather Park or even make a large loop hike with the Lake Angeles trail, but this was too early in the season.
