Raptor Ridge Trail — Saturday, Apr. 17, 2021

Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area

I started from the Chuckanut Mountain/Pine & Cedar Lake trailhead off of Old Samish Road.  From here you're climbing right out of the gate - be ready to get your altitude on right away.  It's pretty steep in places and I can imagine going down could be tough if you have ache-prone knees so trekking poles might be in order (I was sort of missing mine on parts of the descent).

It's a great trail nonetheless and once you hit the junction for Pine & Cedar Lakes (left/east turn) and Hemlock Trail / Raptor Ridge (right/west turn) you've done the bulk of your climbing.

Lots of trillium when I was there and look out for the hole/cavity in a trail-side boulder where folks have stashed little surprises (there was a painted rock in there when I went past.)

Views from the Overlook are pretty nice.  It's not a huge area to sit there on the rock outcropping and with social distancing could be tricky so I scrambled downslope a bit to get some space and semi-solitude.

I did trek a bit past Raptor Ridge Outlook in hopes of finding the peak of Chuckanut Mountain but it was covered in blow-downs and I could not find any discernable way up.  Enjoy, fellow travelers!
