Trip Report

Fort Worden State Park - Point Wilson — Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2021

Olympic Peninsula > Northern Coast
One of the batteries - for 10 and 12 inch guns

After camping in Sequim, I went to Fort Worden for day two of my Olympic forts tour. As with Fort Flagler, Fort Worden has a network of well-preserved coastal artillery batteries and a light house.  But the batteries here are much larger, though of a similar period and fashion.  The other difference I noticed is that Fort Worden is mostly roads, while Fort Flagler also has large sections of trails through the forest and beach.  In both cases there is lots to explore.  I stuck to the batteries, but there are also restored quarters and buildings in another part of the park and some museums.  There were deer hanging out along the batteries, which was cool to see - they seemed very used to people, so I was able to watch them for a while.  Again, I'd recommend this as an alternative winter hike and one where you may get some sunshine. I'll need to make it over to Fort Casey at some point to complete the triangle of fire...

You can access the lighthouse down at the shore or view it from above
Another battery added to provide a field of fire westward into the Strait of Juan de Fuca
