Just a note - there is a dead elk a short 1/2 mile in from the south(Buck Creek) entrance. It's right next to the trail and looks like it was dragged off the trail. Probably not a place to linger. On 2nd thought I decided not to put up any pictures of it. If you are hiking in from the south you are bound to see and smell it.

You can avoid this area by entering/exiting thru the Church Camp Trail. If you are unfamiliar, this starts 1 mile up the Buck Creek Rd(7160) - park across from the entrance to the camp(now called Black Diamond something...) - you can not use the facilities but you CAN hike up the road and find the start of the the CCT across the road from the last cabin. It's a nice 3/4 mile trail that intersects the Skookum Flats Trail about a mile from the carcass.
