Trip Report

Vesper Peak — Tuesday, Jul. 2, 2024

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway
Looking down Ragged Edge from the top of Vesper

Started out about 8:30am, and turned out to be much warmer than the forecast! Creek crossings weren't bad, the third one has two options, a larger log or set of smaller ones. I found the smaller ones easier.

A few snow patches approaching the top of Headlee Pass, and then continuous snow starting after the subsequent traverse (around 5000') Snow was annoyingly soft. I used microspikes and an axe, but steps were easy enough to kick so just the axe would've been fine. Glissaded back down the top which was the best part of the day!

Heading up the Sunrise Mine Trail
Lake Elan still frozen under Sperry Peak
Third creek crossing

Thanks for this recent report!

I was looking to do this one this upcoming Monday July 8th, right after and during a weekend of hotter temperatures reaching into the low 90s for Silverton WA. I'll have ice ax, microspikes, and helmet and have experience, but a bit worried if after the intense heat I'll face any more than usual risk of avalanches or deceptive snow bridges or crevasses that will be harder to notice on this trail. Do you have any opinion?

I think the three areas that I'd keep a close eye on next week, would be
1. Crossing the creek that flows out from Lake Elan at about 5100'. It was still covered in snow when I was there, but I could here the water flowing underneath. I think it could possibly be more treacherous with warmer temps.
2. The tree wells at about 5300', where there was noticeable melt out.
3. Melt out around boulders at about 6000'. I postholed down to me knee in this area. Stay safe and hope you have a good time!
