Southwest Washington > Columbia River Gorge - OR
The approach to Tamanawaus Falls

I first hiked this trail in 1979. According to my 1974 hike book, the name of destination was Tamanawaus Falls, and the trail was 1.6 miles one way.

Since then, the letter ‘u’ has been dropped; the spelling is Tamanawas. And for whatever reason, this trail has conflicting mileages. When researching it, I saw the length (one way) variably listed as 1 mile, 1.7 miles, and 1.8 miles. The signage along the trail suggests that it is closer to 2 miles. My GPS track confirmed 1.8 as the correct mileage, one way.

I went with my son and his two children. The younger is just 5 ½ years old, and with a couple of rest breaks, she did fine on the trail. As you near the falls, there is one short section with switchbacks through rockfall. But most of the trail is gentle.
