Worked on the West Boundary Trail on a WTA work party. There were ten of us. We entered the trail from the Mowich Lake road, about 1/2 mile after the Park entrance. You have to look closely or you'll drive right past the trail head. It is not marked with a sign. The Mowich Lake road is gravel, with a number of pot holes and wash-boarding. Take it slowly. A high clearance vehicle is not required.
The trail climbs steadily from the road. We worked about a mile up the trail with an elevation gain of about 700 feet. The work included improving the tread and ensuring good drainage.
We had peek-a-boo looks at Mt. Rainier through the trees. By the end of the day, we managed to complete several hundred feet of trail. This was a fun work party, and the trail would be a good one for folks wanting to find solitude. Also, there are no entry reservations required when you enter the Park here.
There is enough room to park almost a dozen cars along the road. There is no bathroom, although there is a nice one about 1/2 mile up the road at the Paul Peak trail head.
Over the past month, I have worked over 20 days here. In that time, we saw only two hikers! This is a great hike if you want to avoid the crowds!
