South Cascades > Mount St. Helens

Following google maps took me right to the trailhead. You’ll find the 2 car parking spot on the left and the Kalama Ski Trail sign on the right. I found parking on the road since the parking lot was full.

Getting to the trailhead was easy except for the last .3 miles. Required slow driving and maneuvering, but totally doable with my Subaru Outback. I wouldn’t recommend trying it with a low clearance vehicle. There is places to park before the road gets rough, so that’s always an option.

Trail was generally in good condition. Just a few fallen trees near the open marshland that are easily stepped over. I did miss the turn off of the trail that leads to an easy crossing of the drainage ditch at the beginning of the hike. (See photo). If you continue straight like I did, you can still get across, just a little scrambling involved.

At this time of year, there were no lakes. Just puddles. And the clouds hid most of Mt St Helen’s. It was still a worthwhile hike though! I only saw 4 other people in trail. No other dogs.

Trail veers left. Follow blue placards on tree.
