White Chuck Bench — Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025

A nice winter hike along the White Chuck River. I stopped at the viewpoint that looks down on a bend of the river with mountain peaks in the background, Sloan was the only one I can identify. I went on to Black Oak Creek and the footbridge there. The creek is flowing well and there are lots of interesting ice formations on branches hanging over the water. During the hike I saw three other people and three dogs.

The trail is in great condition. It is frozen solid enough that my boots didn't pick up anything, they were as clean at the end as when I began. The access road (FR-22) is in good condition. There are a few pot holes on the lower section that can be avoided or gone over slowly. Any vehicle can make it through. The toilets at the parking lot at the confluence of the Sauk and White Chuck are open.
