Trip Report

Big Cedar Tree - Kalaloch, Kalaloch - Browns Point — Thursday, May. 22, 2025

Olympic Peninsula > Pacific Coast
Tree of Life

We had camped at Bogachiel SP for 2 nights and on or way home today we decided to visit 3 trees in the area. Our first stop was the Duncan Cedar which is 178 ft tall and 19.4 feet in diameter. It is reached in 4 miles of driving  on dirt logging roads which have many potholes, but all are easily traveled if driving slowly. Signage is very good the entire way! The link below has interesting details about the tree which is now mostly dead!

Our next stop was the almost 10000 tear old western red cedar located between Ruby Beach and Fourth Beach. A sign along HWY 101 tells you where to turn. The short access road has many, many potholes, but any vehicle can drive it! The tree used to be 175  feet tall which was third largest of its species, but a storm in March of 2014 split the tree nearly in half. The fallen tree is now a nurse log for future giants! There is a 1/4 mile trail beyond the tree that leads to a grove of ancient red cedars.

Our last stop was a 1.8 RT meander to view the Tree of Life. The shortest trail is closed because of damage to the stairs. There is a posted notice at the start of the trail to the campfire program area giving directions to the tree. You walk through part of CG A and the stairs leading down to the beach are after Campsite 18. We had parked at the large parking lot for day use as we didn't know of the damage to the trail which starts here. (Just past Campsite 18 there is a small parking area for a few day use cars.) I included an interesting link below about the tree!
