Klapatche Park — Sunday, Jun. 1, 2025

Mount Rainier Area > NW - Carbon River/Mowich
Klapatche Park & Aurora Lake

I e-biked up to the St Andrew's Creek Trailhead today to try to make it to Klapatche Park. It was sunny when I got there and when I got back. Unfortunately, the snow up on the mountain seemed to be making its own fog and clouds. So much for a sunny day.

The trail is in good shape but there are a lot of trees down. There are just a few easy trees until you top out at the ridge. Then there is tree after tree all the way to the top. Some are over, some are under but the ones you have to go through were a pain.

I hit snow right where I expected it. When the ridge flattens out and the trees get thinner the snow starts right away. And I mean right away. It went from open trail to 100% snow in 10 feet. That was just a bit over 5,000 feet.

There was a snow free area of a couple hundred yards but everything else was hard packed ice. I would not have made it without spikes.

There is about 3 to 4 feet of snow at Klapatche Park with drifts of about 6 feet. For those of you preparing for the Wonderland, the snow depth seems about normal for June 1.
