My husband and I take advantage of our retirement status to hike midweek so crowds were non-existent. We backpacked in to the old car camp Monday, day hiked to Big Timber and back Tues, and hiked out on Wed. The log blocking the trail described in an earlier report is now gone. I was delighted by the variety and quantity of wildflowers. Before the Dosewallips CG there were honeysuckles, paintbrush, star flowers, twin flowers, paintbrush, goats beard and many, many more. We ate handfuls of salmonberries. There are a zillion thimbleberry bushes with flowers but no berries yet. On the way to Big Timber there were wonderful pink rhodis in bloom. All along the trail, the waterfalls are fantastic. There were no issues with creek crossings as far as we went. This is forest bathing at its best!
The Dosewallips campground is an interesting juxtaposition of old and new. There is a nice new privy and several very ancient bear lockers with notes saying that they are for campers "with no vehicles". All the picnic tables have been removed but the fire rings (in varying states of repair) are abundant. I found the remnants of what was once a ranger station not far from a brand new bike rack.
