Trip Report

Abernathy Pass via Cedar Creek — Thursday, Jun. 12, 2025

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20
North Gardner Mt. View at 3.0 miles

As Abam noted on May 31, the trail to the falls is in good condition with flowers blooming. There is a large log with a few other logs at 0.6 mile that has a short, steep boot path around.

I was able to go in 6.2 miles to the stream 0.2 miles before the West Fork Cedar Creek crossing.

From 1.7 to 4.1 miles, the trail is in the recovering forest from the 2021 Cedar Creek Fire. There are lots of fireweed, low brush, and some seedlings. The trail has been logged out through this section.

From 4.1 miles to 5.1 miles, the trail is a pleasant walk mostly through an old growth forest with some open areas.

Beyond 5.1 miles, the trail is back in a recovery forest from the 2006 Cedar Creek Fire.

The are 26 logs over the trail from 4.2 miles to 6.2 miles. Hikers will have some difficulty with the logs at 4.9 miles.

Most of the large secondary streams are flowing. Crossing these is pretty easy except for the ones at 5.2 miles and 6.2 miles which must be forded or crossed on sketchy logs upstream or downstream of the ford.

The camps at 2.6, 3.8, 4.3, and 4.4 miles are all usable.

There were very fresh tracks over hikers' tracks by a moose heading up the trail, from 0.9 to 2.6 miles.

Mosquitoes were somewhat bothersome in the camp at 3.8 miles and beyond, when stopped.

Columbine at 2.2 miles
Typical Trail through the 2021 Cedar Creek Fire Area
Jumbled Log Crossing at 6.2 miles (alternative to shallow ford)
