Vesper Peak — Friday, Jul. 4, 2025

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway
Looking up the valley towards Headlee Pass

Vesper is a beautiful hike right now, but it's still a little bit of an adventure with the snow!

The first phase in the forest was very pleasant - no blowdowns or any major obstacles. The stream crossings at the beginning of the hike are just manageable without getting your feet wet. The last one is slightly trickier but not a problem with poles to help keep balance. Once you get out onto the open brushy areas, there is one section that has been getting eroded and you need to watch your step to avoid slipping into the gully.

The trail up Headlee Pass is in good shape and totally snow free. The switchbacks are all melted out and there are some beautiful wildflowers at the top.

The snow starts around when you cross the outlet of Lake Elan - at around 5000'. We found microspikes necessary for the final push, around 5600', but someone more nimble than us summitted without them. We got to the top a bit too late and the clouds from the west started rolling in, but still enjoyed the views of Sperry and Morningstar. On the way down, we attempted to descend carefully on foot, but ended up glissading involuntarily after losing our footing. The snow is slick and not particularly suncupped or bumpy at this point, so it was easy to lose grip and take a ride. We didn't need an ice axe to slow down but it might be nice to have if you're on the heavier side.
