Trip Report

Boulder River — Monday, Aug. 11, 2025

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway

We went to the end of the trail and were the only ones at the river. That was beautiful.

In spite of the good tree cover it was a very hot day. Bring lots of water, since there's not much water access, at least for the first half of the trail, and the streams in midsummer aren't running much. In spite of the long dry spell there are quite a few mucky parts of the trail, so waterproof foot gear is nice, and would probably be necessary in rainier seasons.

The description of rocky and rooty for the last 2/3 of the trail was accurate. As I got hotter and more tired I was less careful about my foot placement and started wishing I had worn my harder-soled boots. I had sore feet for the hike back.

There were about 4 groups headed out as I was going in on Monday, and 5 groups going in as I was leaving Tuesday. It's a popular place (and well-deserved).
