Trip Report

Gobblers Knob — Friday, Oct. 17, 2025

Mount Rainier Area > SW - Longmire/Paradise
Lake George

The road and trail all the way to Gobblers Knob is in great shape, no downed trees, no snow.  The camp at Lake George is also in great shape.  The lookout is locked up for the winter season.  With the government shutdown, entrance to the park is free and camping permits are not required.  Mostly conifers in this area, so not a lot of fall colors, but there are a few pockets of yellows and reds along West Side Road.

Speaking of West Side Road, there is some construction in work near the parking lot (3.2 miles from main road).  When this is done, it looks like this (formerly washed out) area will be passable for vehicles, and the rest of the road (at least to Round Pass) is in awesome condition.  Much better than 99% of the other Cascades forest roads.  If this road does not open (at least to Round Pass) next summer, I sure hope WTA will use its influence to nag the park superintendent.
