Trip Report

Lookout Mountain Lookout — Sunday, Nov. 16, 2025

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20

Aferrenberg and I got up to the lookout today, on this iffy weather day. We ended up getting some nice views looking up the Cascade River Valley when we were making the traverses around 4600 ft and also up around 5000 ft, but when we got up to around 5400ft we were in the fog, and got rained on up the last 300 vertical feet up to the lookout.

Trail is pretty much snow free until the traverse on the open avalanche slope at around 4600ft. The creek crossing before this was doable, as rocks we skipped across were above the water. There is on significant blowdown across the trail  between the creek crossing and the traverse at 4600ft. After this traverse is where we started running into to deeper snow. There were some boot prints that we followed from yesterday which was helpful as we didn’t post hole much. A couple of spots the boot prints were wiped out from a small avalanche from I assume last night. A couple of these traverses are quite steep, and wouldn’t want to be crossing with unfavorable avalanche conditions.

The lookout is open.Just make sure to secure the storm door after visiting. We started at 9:30am and finished at 4:40pm.  9.6 miles with 4500ft gain
