Hamlin Park, South Woods Park — Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026

I took my dog on his third outing this week (so grateful for the opportunities to get out to enjoy this beautiful January sunshine!) this time to Hamlin Park and South Woods, a 4.5 mile loop from our house including both. South Woods had more trash than usual, and some noisy event was going on at Shorecrest High so we didn't linger (I couldn't hear many birds).

We detoured east for some Little Free libraries, then cut west on 160th and across Hamlin Park trails to 15th NE before turning south. I was surprised at the number of huge downed trees that must have been fairly recent. Other than blowdowns, the trail is in great shape following more than a week of dry and icy weather. Well-drained and no standing water anywhere.

New to me were some "stick houses" that people must have been experimenting with, crude structures that I don't think would keep anyone dry but must have been entertaining to build, maybe by kids?

There were plenty of people out walking their dogs. Over the span of 4.5 miles and 1 hour 40 we heard 18 bird species including kinglets, a couple of flickers, a hairy woodpecker, and 8-10 Anna's hummingbirds. Lovely day.
