ACCESS ROAD NOTE: The unpaved portion of the access road (FS 4330 or Cle Elum Valley Road) is potholed and in *very* poor shape. Speed: count on about an hour to go about 10 miles with a four-wheel drive or higher clearance all-wheel drive vehicle. Low-clearance sedans are not recommended.

Does anyone know if this is just the awful condition it has been in for the last 5-10 years, or if it is even worse?

I drove the road Saturday and Monday. It is as bad as I have seen it, although it has been deteriorating for several years. I have driven this road since about 1985, and if they don't maintain this road soon it will just be a jeep, ATV trail or a hike from Salmon La Sac. I believe that USFS no longer has adequate funds for road maintenance, and most of the money is spent on Environmental Assessments that take years to complete. If they attempt to repair this road some group will probably sue them. Years ago I believe that they maintained roads with timber sale money. That is gone. Even if they started the process now, it would probably be 5 years or more before they could do road maintenance on the Cle Elum Road. They would need an EA and then money from Congress. They would probably want to make a 10 million $ project out of what could be a $50,000 project. Many roads are closed on the Naches Ranger District with only a chance of a few of them being repaired in the next 5 years. In the Naches Ranger District it takes 5 years to replace a single bridge. Trail maintenance is important, but someday we will have no access to those trails unless we all start driving ATV's.

Is the road fairly flat or are there big drop offs on the shoulder? The Day Hiking Snoqualmie Region guide says to continue FS 4330 'another 9.5 miles through beautiful meadows to the trailhead'. Doesn't seem like it can be all that bad.

I drove the road last year, and I drove it today. Absolutely thrilled to report that it was a dream. The road has been graded and has a fresh layer of gravel. It was pleasant driving all the way up to the second Scatter Creek crossing - you'd want a higher-clearance vehicle to drive in to the primitive campground where we parked.
