Kettles Trail System — Sunday, Sep. 1, 2013

Puget Sound and Islands > Whidbey Island
Walked a large loop around the Kettles trail system, starting at the "main" or "north" gate right off highway 20, over to Fort Ebey State Park, south along the bluff trail and back around back through the Kettles. Most of the area is fairly young forest, Cedar, Hemlock, fir, Madrone and several impressive groves of wild Rhododendron. Take a little time to bone up on the geology of the area before going so you can pick out the glacial kettles as you wander around. The trails are well marked but it's worth printing out a map from the www.islandcounty.net website as there are many intersections, zigzags, etc. An interesting forest walk within the Olympic rain shadow.
Mt. Baker over Penn Cove from the Baker View point on the east side of the park
lots of wild Rhododendron in the shady areas
many beautiful, large Madrone trees
