Ruby Mountain — Sunday, May. 7, 2017

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20
Ruby Mountain
Warning: Ruby Mountain is an advanced hike. There's NO trail. The beginning in the forest climbs steeply up the ridge on what is essentially a goat path. Once you reach the snow, there are dangerous cornices along the ridge. And you'll need an ice axe so you can stop yourself if you do slide. And at the very top, there's some class 3 rock scramble too. Solid adventure if you know what you're doing. We started at the northwest ridge (the winter route) near the big boulder field. Time round trip: 11 hours (5 hrs 45 mins ascending, 4 hrs 10 mins descending). Distance: 8 miles Elevation gain: 5,700 ft Gear used: Spikes, ice axe, typical winter clothes (although it was pretty warm), 3+ liters of water (I drank all of mine) Didn't need showshoes, snow is hard and sometimes icy. Views were spectacular.
Traveling along the ridge toward Ruby
Great views of Diablo Lake
Spectacular 360 views of various surrounding mountains!
